The NICE bus was originally MTA Long Island Bus. In 2011, the Long Island bus was privatized, due to Nassau County's funding dispute with the MTA, and the contract was awarded to Veolia Transport, but at the time it merged with the original Transdev to form Veolia Transdev, now just simply Transdev. It changed its name to Nassau Inter-County Express, and began operations on January 1, 2012.

Also, the Q72 (then known as the B72) was handed over to private operation to Triboro Coach in 1961, being the only city-operated bus route to be privatized.
